xrandr --output HDMI-0 --scale 0.5x0.5 --filter nearest
  1. --output HDMI-0 selects the screen connected to HDMI port 0; use xrandr -q to list available options

  2. --scale 0.5x0.5 means the image will appear twice as large

  3. --filter nearest disables interpolation for a clean-looking result

This command is great if you’re using bitmap fonts, e.g. GNU Unifont, and the app cannot scale by itself, e.g. xterm.

To revert back to the normal scale:

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --scale 1x1
